About Carlton Cemetery District

Nestled in the heart of Western Montana, Carlton Cemetery offers a peaceful resting place Overlooked by the beauty of the Selway-Bitterroot wilderness. For over a century, our grounds have provided comfort, reflection, and connection to community history. Burials from prominent local family’s dating back to the 1890’s are not uncommon, but most older sites are in the 1910’s and 1920’s with some family plots spanning generations.

Don’t Feed the Bears

Because of its proximity to public lands, the cemetery hosts a wide variety of animals. Elk, deer, foxes, squirrels, eagles, hawks, song birds, and the occasional black bear. They don’t eat much but the elk do tend to occasionally tip over a headstone.

National Historic Register Note

In front of the Carlton Cemetery is the historic Florence-Carlton Church listed in the National Historic Registry. Originally founded in 1890 on land gifted to the church by a nearby Catholic Priest that felt the Protestants in the area needed a meeting place. Carlton was a a small town at that time with a train station that fed raw logs to mills in nearby Missoula Montana and had a vibrant farming and ranching economy.
